We offer a number of services, some of which may come before you acquire your dog, others in the early stages of the dog's life and even more as the dog reaches maturity. We are not veterinarians and will not attempt to diagnose illnesses nor to medicate them. We are not nutritional experts and will not attempt to give advice on such matters. Having said that we will offer advice on basic first aid for dogs and also advise what we might do in certain circumstances and what to look for in food. Mature Dog Training - One on One. We offer counselling and advice before you get your puppy or mature dog. Is it the right fit for you, your family and your lifestyle. Please remember that a puppy should NEVER be given as a gift to somebody who is not expecting it. A puppy is for life, not just a moment's pleasure. It is a joy but also a responsibility. Puppy Training - One on OneWe recommend that training your puppy begins the day after you bring him home - whatever his age. It is the opinion of many experts in the field of dog training that what a dog learns between the ages of 8 to 13 weeks is in there for life. Both the good and the bad. This is the time that the puppy learns to jump up on you, to tug on your clothes to get attention, and to do the hundred and one other things that may be cute in a puppy but not in the adult dog. At this early age it might not be wise to expose the puppy to the various stimuli that other dogs may offer. For this reason we work with you (and your family members) and your puppy. We do not recommend puppy classes at this age UNLESS they are very well controlled with an excellent trainer/client ratio. Modern thinking has shown that very boisterous pups (hyper lab types for example) may not be suitable class mates for the shy toy dog. In the remote area that we live it is difficult to fill classes with puppies of a suitable age and temperament. For this and other reasons we do not offer group puppy classes. We recommend a set of three sessions. The first usually lasts about and hour and a half. The second and third just an hour. We ask that you prepare a list of your concerns and expectations for your new family member before you come. By doing that you are not wasting your time trying to think of problems you may have encountered. We also ask that you consider what your expectations are of the dog within your household. Because you are not regulated by a class timetable, you can work at your own speed. If it takes you two weeks to master the 'homework' that is fine, if you master it in five days, that is fine also. You work at your speed and not that of a class. In addition you are not tied down to listening to the problems that other people have had. We find that, in the three session, you can learn as much, if not more, than in a six or eight week class. Coupled with that you will learn the science of training using the clicker and should be able to teach you dog anything that he is mentally and physically capable of. We charge $35.00 an hour plus GST for these services in our home. Mature Dog Training - One on One For the very same reasons as for puppy training, we find it more beneficial to the owner to be able to concentrate on their dog rather than on the dogs of other people. We therefore recommend private training for learning new behaviours and for stopping unwanted behaviours. Once you have the dog working the way you want is the time to go into group classes with all the distractions that they entail. Our charges are the same as for puppy one on one training. Rally Obedience is the latest obedience competition for dogs. It is fast, fun, enjoyable and open to all dogs, over six months of age, whether purebred or not. We offer seminars to breed clubs and other interested groups, There are a number of jurisdictions currently organising Rally, The American Kennel Club, The United Kennel Club and the Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers (all in the States) and CARO - the Canadian Association of Rally Obedience. It is the latter that we promote. Doggone Safe is a non-profit organization dedicated to Dog Bite Prevention. We are proud to part of this organization. We currently offer the 'Be A Tree' bite prevention program. This program is an excellent resource for schools and all organisations involved in the care of children. Please contact us for more information.
